Cotton Field Secondary School - Guyana
Motto: Towards Community Development Mission: The Cotton Field Secondary School will assist students to become well-rounded, employable and ambitious adults; capable of working alone and in groups for their own benefit and that of their community and country; as well as to take advantage of opportunities for upward mobility. Philosophy: This school provides the experiences whereby every child can acquire a relevant education in today’s changing environment through the promotion of right attitudes, knowledge and skills and to understand and develop an appreciation for family, community and state. History: The Cotton Field Secondary School formerly the Anna Regina Community High School is located at Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast, Region #2, Pomeroon/Supenaam in the country of Guyana, South America. It is situated on the western side of the public road about one hundred metres south of Anna Regina. It is bounded by the Cotton Field public road on the eat, government compound on the north and the Anna Regina Multilateral School on the south/southwest. The corner stone of the building was laid by the Honourable Mrs. W. Gaskin, Minister of Education, Youth, Race Relations and Community Development on the 19th of July, 1965. In 1976, the Anna Regina Community High School became one of the pilot schools when the Community High School programme was launched. The school was then managed by Headmaster, Mr. Rudolph Davidson, and an administrative staff comprising of on Deputy Headmaster, three Senior Masters/Mistresses and eight Heads of Departments. The motto is “Towards Community Development”. The first intake of students came from the tops of Hampton Court, Sparta, Anna Regina, Taymouth Manor and Queenstown Primary Schools. Prior to the emergence of the Anna Regina Community High School the building was used to accommodate students from the Anna Regina Secondary School. The school offered both academic and technical subjects from levels 7-11 students. The Secondary School Proficiency Examination (Part I) Syllabus was done with all students from level 7 to level 9. At this level students wrote Part I of the SSPE which consists of academic subjects via: English Language, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and General Reasoning. High achievers at this examination were placed in classes where they were prepared for three years to write CXC Examination Basic Proficiency. Level 10 students wrote the Part II examination in their option areas. With the introduction of the SSRP, Anna Regina Community High School was chosen as the pilot school in Region #2. The Secondary School Reform Programme immediately introduced Training Programmes to upgrade the level of teachers’ competence to teach CXC programmes in at least the core subjects. Other training programmes such as Management for Administrative Staff; Collecting Information, Analysing and Documenting same was done periodically between 1995 – 2001. Apart from human resource development, SSRP placed emphasis on supplying some of the equipment and resources that were essential in ensuring that the teachers can teach meaningfully. Such resources are textbooks in at least the core subjects for all levels, appropriate teaching aids, audio tapes, video tapes, cassettes, computers etc. Finally, the school building was extended and in addition to more rooms in which to teach, a science laboratory (well equipped) was built by the SSRP. During this transition period of Universal Secondary Education for All, the name of the school was changed from Anna Regina Community High School to Cotton Field Secondary School. The school building was officially handed over by SSRP on the 26th of October, 2001 and the corner stone was installed at the entrance fo the school at this befitting handing over ceremony. |
